Ethoca vs Verifi RDR vs Order Insight: Which Do You Need?
Compare Ethoca Alerts, Verifi RDR, Order Insight and Consumer Clarity: what each does, which card network it covers, and which a subscription business needs.

Redux Team
Ethoca, Verifi RDR and Order Insight all stop chargebacks before they hit your dispute rate, but they work at different moments and on different card networks. Order Insight (Visa) and Consumer Clarity (Mastercard) help customers recognize a charge while they're asking their bank about it. Verifi RDR (Visa) and Ethoca Alerts (Mastercard) automatically refund disputes that match your rules so they don't count. For a subscription business taking Visa and Mastercard, the strongest setup usually uses both kinds, on both networks.

Order Insight and Consumer Clarity: help customers recognize the charge
When a customer looks at their banking app or calls their bank because they don't recognize a charge, the issuer can look up the purchase. With Order Insight (Visa) or Consumer Clarity (Mastercard), it gets details like the product description, order date, customer email, account ID and your support phone number (Stripe). If the customer recognizes the charge, there's no dispute.
How well it works depends on your data. Stripe sends whatever you provided with the charge, so clear product descriptions, a recognizable merchant name and the customer's email matter.
CE 3.0 blocks through Order Insight
Order Insight also uses Visa's Compelling Evidence 3.0 rules before a dispute is filed. If the customer has at least two prior transactions with complete product descriptions, matching IP addresses and at least one matching email or delivery address, the issuer must block the dispute (Stripe). It's never filed, and you pay no dispute fee. That's especially useful for subscriptions, where repeat payments from the same customer are normal.
Verifi RDR: resolve Visa disputes automatically
RDR lets you set rules, for example "refund any potential fraud dispute under $10," and Visa disputes that match get resolved automatically for a per-dispute fee (Stripe). The benefits:
Resolved disputes don't count toward your dispute rates.
You don't pay a separate dispute fee on them.
They're excluded from Visa's VAMP count, subject to the timing of Visa's data extract (Visa).
Limits to know: RDR only resolves disputes for the full amount of the original transaction, and not on transactions you've already refunded (Stripe).
Ethoca Alerts: resolve Mastercard chargebacks
Ethoca Alerts works the same way for Mastercard: you set rules and would-be chargebacks get resolved automatically. Resolved disputes don't count toward dispute rates, which helps with Mastercard's programs such as the Excessive Chargeback Program (Stripe). Rules only apply to chargebacks started after you enroll.
Which do you need?
Situation | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
Lots of "I don't recognize this" disputes | Order Insight + Consumer Clarity | Helps customers recognize the charge before they dispute |
Many repeat customers on Visa | Order Insight with CE 3.0 data | Can block disputes entirely |
Close to a VAMP or Mastercard threshold | RDR + Ethoca Alerts | Removes matching disputes from your counts quickly |
Low prices, high dispute counts | RDR + Ethoca Alerts with low-amount rules | Cheaper to refund than to fight |
One caution: automatic resolution means refunding. If your rules are too broad, you'll refund disputes you could have won. Start narrow, usually low amounts and fraud-coded disputes, and widen based on the results.
Setting it up
Check what your processor offers. On Stripe, these tools run through its dispute prevention product with no separate integration, and you set resolution rules in Radar (Stripe). Other processors and resellers offer them too.
Improve your data first. Send IP address, customer email, clear product descriptions and, if you ship, delivery address on every payment.
Set conservative rules. Low amounts and fraud-coded disputes first.
Watch your rates monthly. Compare dispute counts, VAMP ratio and refund costs before and after.
These tools work best alongside the basics: clear billing terms, trial reminders and an easy cancel button. See friendly fraud in subscription businesses and Visa VAMP explained.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between Ethoca and Verifi?
They cover different card networks. Verifi is a Visa company and its tools (Order Insight and RDR) work on Visa transactions. Ethoca is a Mastercard company and its tools (Consumer Clarity and Ethoca Alerts) work on Mastercard transactions (Stripe). Most businesses that take both cards need both.
Do disputes resolved by RDR count toward my dispute rate?
No. Stripe says disputes resolved through RDR don't count toward your dispute rates, and Visa's VAMP excludes disputes resolved through pre-dispute solutions, depending on the timing of its data extract (Stripe, Visa).
Is Order Insight free?
Pricing depends on how you access it. Stripe lists its dispute prevention pricing on its pricing page, and other providers set their own. Check your processor's current terms.
Do chargeback alerts work for subscriptions?
Yes, and they suit subscriptions well. Many subscription disputes are small, recognizable charges where the customer forgot or didn't recognize the payment. Order Insight helps them recognize it, and RDR or Ethoca Alerts can refund the rest automatically before they count.
